<lj:music>Nobuo Uematsu [Tour de Japon] - From Zanarkand</lj:music>

Oh hay gais. 8)
It's been a while, but I've been busy.

For real this time.
-cough-

My vacation finally started a few weeks back, after almost three weeks of hard work in two different places.
Our Japanese teacher invited us to his summer cottage at the beginning of August, so me and classmates went. :]

Anyway, this means another picture post, so prepare yourselves. :]

Since our sensei's summer cottage was in Savonlinna (where my classmates live), Jenna offered to be the driver and promised not to get us lost.
And yes, she kept her promise...we got there perfectly safe and sound. Bet you didn't see that coming HUH! :p

The place was amazing and I'm so angry at myself for not taking more pictures of it, but I'll share the little that I've got.

We arrived just in time for lunch that sensei's wife had prepared. IT WAS DELICIOUS!

The table outside was just pure genius. I loved how it had been placed under this huuuuge tree. It was all very natural and it certainly was long enough for even up to 25 people.

The chair at the end of the table.

They had the cutest beast ever, called Musti.

Sensei being the silly teacher that his is. :]

After lunch and all, we went for a little boat trip, just to land on a weird little island.

Can you see how amazingly wide the island is? =D
You could take just about five steps from one edge to the other and that was it. It was longer though..it continued much further than what you can see here.

One of my classmates had brought her dog with her and he was just running wild on the island, like he'd never been free like that. He's really shy with people though so it was a real task to try and get a picture of him.

Find Oikku. 8D

I tried to get a closer look at the island and the forest, but it got a little tricky. T_T

Walking here and there didn't feel all that nice because...

...my shoes weren't really made for this kind of ground.
I FAIL. T_T

I decided to take one lake-scene-whatever picture just to make my trip worth the painful walk and headed back to where my friends were waiting.

The lazy bums had been just sitting there the whole time! Pssh, BORING!

Jenna tried a little zenness to bring the sun out again.
She failed.

A LITTLE TAN WOULDN'T HURT, YES?!
(watcha gonna do though, had to work all summer...no time for outdoors.)

Aaand that was our fantastic first real holiday in months! :]

-Mint

Get this;
> I have to send a few papers back to Savonlinna for my International Coordinator to sign them
> I have to get the signed papers and the Letter of Acceptance (which finally arrived, btw!) to KELA for my financial aid
> I have to get the financial aid papers and the LoA to work (travel agency) for my Visa (they'll send the papers to the Embassy for me and hurry them up, this is the easiest way)

How long do you think all of this will take? I mean, jessus, it's already the last week of June!
> 3 days for the papers to visit Savonlinna and get back (IF the IC'll send them out as soon as she's done signing them)
> KELA takes ages..a week?
> ...how the hell do I get the papers to the travel agency in Mikkeli when I'm already working in Savonlinna?! (I leave for Savonlinna by 3rd of July)

Just when I thought the worst was over. -_-

Oh, and to add a little fuel...I've got nowhere to stay in Savonlinna.

OH JOY!

I left my application for a temp apartment for the student apartments when I left Savonlinna this Spring. I specifically pointed out that I NEED one of the apartments that have furniture, since I'll only be there one month. I also asked for a single room flat 'cause of my working hours (varies between 3 p.m - 2 a.m).
We talked it over and they told me not to worry, they'd definitely find something for me.

I heard nothing from them ever since.
I start to get slightly worried...I'm moving in a week and I don't have an apartment.
Sooo, I call them to check up on things.
What do they tell me?
That they've got a low cost house that comes with a butler, chef, an indoor pool and a 100 hectare backyard waiting for me, but they just forgot to call?
BOOO.
Wrong.

It was something along the lines:
"Oh..this is strange..your application seems fine and we've got all you papers here, but somehow we've skipped you when handing out the apartments for those in line. When did you say you were supposed to move? Oh, next week? ...right."

So they're just kinda keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that someone moves out from a furnished apartment. Until that happens..I'll be moving into an unfurnished flat, with a housemate.
This sucks very very much 'cause I don't have any furniture.
Well I do..but nothing that I'm gonna move there just because of one freaking month.

Can I please scream and shout and cry now?

I'm already hating the place I have to work at for a month and now I'm sleeping on the floor too.
And eating.
And watching TV.
And all that jazz.
+ I've got all the paperwork to worry about.

How exotic.

So boohoo.

Hey hey hey!

I've been trying not to get too bored while I'm internetless and today we took our new cameras and went for a drive with Pia. Our "drive" turned out to be a 4 ½ hour "getting lost in the middle of nowhere" operation.

...which we absolutely loved. It was wicked.

Pictures behind the cut...off you go.

(The cut is picture heavy...duh.)
We started of on a familiar road and somewhat inside the city borders, but before we even noticed...

The roads started getting smaller and smaller...

But fearless (and already lost), we drove on and continued on the pumby roads.
We somehow automatically were drawn to water and bridges so most of our stops were near rivers and such and that's why most of our pictures have something to do with water.
We just love water.

..well, I know I do.

Sorry 'bout my amateurish fangirlish shots. >.o

Loads of pretty flowers too...and surprisingly enough, growing on a riverbead.

...more ermm..flowers? Pretty nevertheless ^^

I even told Pia I saw an oldschool flying buss somewhere along the way, but she didn't believe me.
I was supposed to say that I saw an oldschool airport buss. (Believe me, that actually does make sense in Finnish.)

We found this museum place (and the sign said they had a cafe, but there wasn't one!) next to a cascade...

...and I had an idea.
(but I didn't do it...didn't even mention it to Pia, 'cause she might've played along with it. ._.;)

As we were walking back to our car, we saw something that caught our attention.

We all know what this means, right?
Come on in!

And so we went.
It was a bridge over the cascade, but there was no words saying it was off limits, only a sign saying that you explore the area at your own risk. The whole thing wasn't even that cool.

Still, we got our beloved water shots...

...and I got a snap shot of Pia. Oh the concentration! :'3

We left the cascade and remembered a place we wanted to visit, but couldn't remember where it was.
..not that we even knew where we were.
So we headed back the same roads and took a few familiarish looking turns...

...and ended up on even smaller roads.

When the speed limits hit snail, we decided to stop and walk back to a shootable looking place.

Though no-one said it was safe. >.>

Again, walking back to the car, we noticed something that caught our attention...

Behold, it's Peter Pan x2 ! :o
WITH CAMERAS!

Oh, my bad..it's just the two idiots.
(Left: Mint, Right: Pia)

"Hi, I'm Emmi and I'll be your guide to 'getting lost' today!"

"...oh jesus."

Then we saw something that doesn't need explanation!

Guess what we did.

We walked around the obstacle..seriously, who leaves something like that in the middle of a perfectly well driveable road. Pfft.

What we found was the thing we'd been looking for. We had been here a few years back, but at the time neither of us brought a camera with us and we swore we'd come back, 'cause the place is absolutely stunning. None of these pictures really give you any idea of what it looks like, but it's all I can do for you.
..unless you wanna come to Mikkeli.
In that case I can find a way to get you there in person. :P

We even found something that looks like straight from a Ghibli movie!
What is that thing? O.O

Sadly we didn't have a packed luch with us. T.T

I noticed something totally random too.

We don't think anyone lives here, so we thought it'd be safe to take pictures of just about anything. The oldness of the place just felt so nice. It looked like we'd actually gone back in time.

And they had pretty flowers back then too! :]

We decided it was time to head home.
However the plan wasn't all that simple.

This was a fairly easy choise...

...but here we had to use our heads.

Whenever I play a video game where I'm in a dungeon and there's a situation like this, I like to take the left path.
So IRL, we decided to do the opposite.

And we found;

more small roads...

a biker...

someone's mailbox...

a farm...

Pia's new place...

my new place...

and finally a smooth road to sooth our sore bottoms.

After a while we were back in the city area.

These ugly windows were a proof enough for us.

Aaand that was our amazing 'get lost' -day! :D

-Mint

I started a new blog at wordpress and will be updating it with anything related to my trip to Korea. It's mostly for myself to use later when I have to write the report about the exchange, but I figured it'd be a fun way to keep all my friends updated about things too.

So it'll have stuff about things before, during and after the trip.

Feel free to comment, I don't want it to be a lonely place. :p
Hope to see you there! ^^

[EDIT]
HAHA! I'm not sure yet.
Need to rewatch it.
What I know what I loved about the movie was the way it was shot, and that's why I wanted to make a MV of it.

The song I used is Lights by Nobuchika Eri. <3

Enjoy!
Woohoo!

Finally.
I'm having a proper holiday!
I'm in Lapland now, in the Ruka ski resort. My parents' friends own a cabin here, so they let us borrow it every now and then and this time I thought I'd come along too.

It's been ages (= 5 years) since I've been to the slopes, downhill skiing.
But luckily it doesn't show!
Ha!

Naw..to be honest, I've basically been born and raised in the slopes, so it's no wonder that even if the time passes, I still don't forget the skill.
When me and my brother were kids, we used to have a cabin of our own in Lapland and we'd go there several times every winter and we even went skiing on the little hill that's in Mikkeli and isn't even worth mentioning.

It's really fun being back here.
When you forget that you're freezing [temperature stays under -10 C (=14F) and the wind is stronger the higher up you get], it's quite nostalgic actually.
...well I guess the freezing is part of the memory too. xP

I'd love to upload pics 'cause it's amazing here, but I still don't own a digital camera (T.T).
My old school canon takes good pictures, make no mistake, but it is getting kinda annoying when you can't get the pictures right here right now, you know?

Anyway, I'll promise to put something up when I get back home.
Until then..just imagine snow. Loads of snow.

For now..I googled and stole a pic to give you and idea of what it is like here.

(this is just a few of the slopes..in reality, the whole thing continues a long way to the right.)

じゃね~!
-Mint

What's this?
She updates?
OMG!

I've had absolutely nothing to write about...so I didn't. I'm not saying that I have anything interesting even now, but deal with it.
Really, just a quick update.

As the semester began, so did new courses. I'm pretty sure I'm failing at least two of them...maybe one. Math and Swedish. >.o
So math's the one that I might survive, but Swedish?

No way in hell.

Seriously...last time I had proper Swedish classes was...NEVER. Yeah, we had it during grades 7-9 and even one weeks worth of classes at vocational school. The thing is..the classes we had during the junior high times were nowhere near to be called classes. We were THE worst class ever and so even some of the teachers kinda gave up on us and let us off the hook when it was exam time. I'm not even gonna start telling you about the classes we had in vocational school.
So, what are the odds that I can pass a university level Swedish course smoothly?

Exactly.

I've got the very basics down. Hell, I can even say that I can't speak Swedish!
Jag kan inte tala svenska.
Now you can too!
You'd think that'd be good enough for the teacher...

I'm not sure if it's something I should be happy about, but my Japanese is far better than my Swedish. Considering that Finland is a bilingual country and the odds of me needing Swedish more than Japanese (only for the time being, tho! ^-*) are kinda high.

Change of subject!
I turned in my study abroad application and the motivation letter today! YAY!
No, the uni doesn't have any partner schools in Japan so I won't be going there. Boohoo.

No really..I was sad about it for a while, but there's nothing I can do about it at the moment, and I don't wanna waste any time.
I want to go now.
So I selected my option number two, South Korea.
Yes, the uni has a partner school in Seoul so that's where I'm applying to.

Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for me!
じゃね～！

-Mint

[EDIT]
OMG, our kitchen is freaking scary. It gets so noisy in there when no one's supposed to be there! My house mate's not home and I'm here, in my room. NO ONE'S IN THE KITCHEN! So why~! T.T

Unbelievable.
Right now, Finland is being bashed on by all of Europe. Well, almost.

7.11 was a sad day for many reasons. One being the news that’s been all over already;
Finland’s second school shooting. 8lost their lives, and afterwards the killer shot himself. Among the 8 were the principal of the school (61), 5 boys (age 16-18), a woman (25) and the school nurse (43). The school nurse, a single mother of two (5 and 2), died when she returned to check on a boy who was unfortunately already dead.

It was a sad day for another reason too. Europe got something to criticize about Finland. I’m not gonna go on details and quote every news paper (that are readable in the internet tho), but I do wanna quote one of them. The one that really makes me mad.

Yes, it’s The Times.

The Times writes the following;

(First, the stupidest things ever on the article were the hilarious remarks on the 'ancient beliefs of the Finns'.)

" In the old days Finns used to believe in the dark power of Tuonela, the mythical land of the dead."
"In ancient times the Finns used to worship Ukko, the mythic god of the sky and thunder."

Oh, fear us. Boo.

“Yet despite the common features with other massacres, the shoot-up in Tuusula was a very Finnish affair.”

I’m sorry, what?

A very Finnish affair? …my ass. Can you even remember when was the last time, someone opened fire at school in Finland?

Yeah, thought so.

"At this time of year it is sunk in almost permanent half-light and Finnish families count the days to their winter holidays when they can flee to the bright sunlight of south-east Asian resorts."

What?! I know I hate winter. but only 'cause it's cold. C-O-L-D. I haven't heard anyone complaining about the loss of sunlight.

" Clinical depression is high, the suicide rate too. But above all the Nordic winter isolates the young in the small towns: they arrive at school in the dark and leave it in the dark, travelling long distances to their homes. Friendship in the traditional sense is often a summer luxury."

We're not THAT isolated! Seriously! Where did this guy go when he last visited Finland?!

"Kids as young as 6 take mobiles to school; a child’s first text message is a matter of parental pride."

Kids as young as 6 are usually only in pre-school in Finland, and my friend (who works at pre-schol) hasn't seen one..not even ONE with a mobile phone. First text message is a matter of parental pride? O.o
WTF?

"A youth isolated at school sinks even deeper into isolation when he has left the school gates: a recipe for trouble."

Our only social contact to the outside world and all our friends are in the internet? Uh huh…did you also know that even the killer at the shooting had friends. IRL. –gasp- I know! Amazing!

Now, I’m not saying that the internet isn’t becoming (or isn’t already) a huge part of our (well, mine at least :p) lives, but isn’t it everywhere? Just because we got one recent school shooter, who liked to spend a lot of time in the internet, is reason enough to say that we’ve got no social life whatsoever?

Yes there was another school shooting in Finland, so why wasn’t he spending his time in the internet back in the day, you ask?
‘Cause it was 18 freaking years ago!
Gosh.

Isn’t it only natural that the internet wasn’t as common place to chat with friends around the globe, as it is now? Hasn’t it been like this everywhere?
Don’t write so generally when you don’t even have your facts right. Just because we ride on polar bears, live in igloos and eat popsicles for lunch, doesn’t mean you can make up your own stories.

On the fact that in Finland, you can get a gun way easier than anywhere in the Europe, I agree. Getting the license has been made very easy if you’re smart enough.
See, that there is a f-a-c-t, so even I can agree.

Osanottoni kaikille perheenjäsenen, läheisen tai opiskelutoverin menettäneille.

If you'll excuse me now, I gotta get my black cloak, go burn candles and make sacrifices to Ukko.

-Mint
(too tired to check for grammar, deal with it.)

(Oh, and here's the link to the whole article. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/article2828084.ece)

Think I should update a bit.

I moved..again.
Remember how I said that my house mate wasn't all THAT annoying, except when her bf was around? Yeah, forget that.
Turns out her bf was ALWAYS there when she was.
The cat? Cute as can be, but not taken care of. She just kinda left the cat on its own for nights when she left for her bf's. I felt so sorry for the poor kitty. >.o
Anyway, things happened and I had enough, so I moved 200 meters away and am now happily living with a friend from school in another student apartment. My rent dropped 30€ too!
The room's smaller than the previous one, but is so much more cosy.

I've been visiting home quite often. Now that I moved out, the more I feel like I wanna go back home. Maybe 'cause it feels like a holiday every time I get out of the surroundings of the uni.
I'm hating the early mornings that we're having way too often atm, but I guess I can manage 'till Christmas. Luckily there's plenty of day-offs before x-mas anyways. xP

I've also got an almost certain internship place waiting for me when the summer vacation starts. I'll most likely be behind a reception counter in a hotel. ^^
AND if everything goes as planned, I could be heading for Japan in Spring '09, thanks to the student exchange.
がんばります！

Oh, I almost forgot.
I got a letter from Japan. It was a reeally long awaited one too.
The oldest sister from my second homestay family wrote me after two years. I thought they'd lost my address for good, but boy did it make my day when I saw who it was from.
愛ちゃんありがとう！
返事をぜったいに送ります。（＾０＾）

That's all for now then, take care!

-Mint

I'm still alive.

I moved to the student apartment a week ago, and school also started last monday. Internet works fine, which naturally is the main point. Gosh I'm so glad it works. -whew-
The room's really spacious, I just need to get my posters on the walls somehow. The only thing I don't like is how the bed is so noisy. Every time I turn, even if it's just sightly, I'm sure even the next door neighbors can hear it. >.o

My flatmate is only slightly annoying at times, but most of the time she's ok. She tends to get really annoying when her boyfriend's here.
Now, I don't want to sound like a bitch or anything, but she just keeps giggling and laughing at just about anything the guy does/says. I know he's your bf and all, but come on, the guy's not THAT fun! I'm sure he'll like you just the same even if you lower you volume level just a bit.

Last night my flatmate also asked would I mind if she'd bring a cat here. Not really. I mean, I like animals, I like cats. As long as they're taken care of. I don't want the furball to start chewing/scratching my coats, mittens and scarfs. And I definitely don't want the whole house starting to stink like a rotten hell.

Completely changing the subject, I'm horrible with umbrellas. Seriously, I've no idea what is it with me and umbrellas. Before I came to Savonlinna, I forgot my umbrella on a train. When I finally bought a new one from here, I accidentally left in on a buss, only TWO DAYS AFTER BUYING THE DAMN THING. I need to start carrying the newest one around my neck. -_-;

じゃね～！
-Mint

So I got teh lappy.

It's nothing like what I told my dad to look for. But I don't blame him..he's not a computer person, he looks at the price carefully and just wants the whole thing to be over fast and without any problems.
Yes, this is where I come in.

I was still sound asleep when he called me.

"Hey, where are you atm?"
"Umm..home, you just woke me up. Why?"
"Great! I'll be down in five, so we can go get the lappy."
"..in five? as in 5 minutes?!"
"..didn't you say you were home?"
"..didn't I say you just woke me up?"
"Look, I gotta go now, I'll see you in a bit, we'll talk then."
-click-

I've never been much of a morning person, so I'm always a bit slow in the morning.
(except replace 'a bit' with 'hella')

So I tried to be fast and surprisingly I was ready in five..to 10 minutes. (Dad had to call me once from the car and to tell me to hurry up a bit)
For all week I'd been thinking of everything that I could bother the comp guy with. Everything from Vista to the brand. I already knew that dad had his eyes on a Packard Bell on sale instead of a Toshiba ( I so wanted a Toshiba. T_T), and was a little annoyed about it to begin with.

So we went to the store and the comp guy got us our lappy and asked if there was any questions in mind (he looked at me like I was 12 and getting my first comp ever, prepared to answer to questions like: "How do I open it?" and "How do you spell Packard Bell?").
Now, I know I'm not a geek (don't get me wrong, I don't mean that in a bad way), but I'm informed enough to have heard of all the wonders of Windows Vista.
So I asked about it and oh how convincing I must've looked there with my messy hair and sleepy eyes. He started the story of spitting the hd and installing XP along side Vista, but looked like he didn't believe that I could get any of it, so instead, he started explaining it to my dad. Who looked even more confused than the comp guy.
And my dad just nodded to everything he said. The comp guy was happy..someone was listening to him and agreeing to everything he said, oh joy!

I was still half asleep and too tired to start asking more and when I looked at my dad and saw how much he wanted out of there and get on with his workday (that he had taken a break from for me), I decided not to say anything about the Toshiba laptops and just deal with the Packard Bell.

So now here I am, with a Packard Bell and Vista. A friend of mine is gonna come and help me with installing the XP on Monday, so I gotta cope with Vista 'till then.
Or I can just open my old desktop, which I gotta use anyway when timing. :3

And after Monday, I've got roughly about a week (less) to empty the old comp and get everything I need on the lappy. I've also got to clean up the room and pack rest of the stuff in my room (read: most of the stuff).

It's gonna be a busy week, but I'll manage :P I think it's better that I have something to get my mind off of school, which is slowly trying to get me nervous.

(There must be a million spelling/grammar etc. mistakes..sry about those, but I'm too lazy to check it. Deal with it.)

Wow, what an entry. >.o

-Mint

I don't know why I'm writing this.

I don't really know how to deal with this, so maybe that's why I think that if I write it down, it'll be easier to deal with.
It's nothing big, I just really don't know how I should be taking this.

I just heard that a friend, who I went to junior high with, died in a car crash less than a week ago.
Now, he wasn't a really close friend or anything, but we shared some classes and hang out before the classes.

I haven't seen him in three years or so, but still..it feels so damn absurd that he would be dead now.

Oh, well.

R.I.P.
The summer's going by really fast. どうしょう～・・・ @_@
I don't get it. And I'm not even doing anything.

Luckily July for me is going to be fun fun fun, I just know it. *^-^*
Tomorrow we're going to our summer cottage with Anniina,
*play
*eat
*swim
*play some more
*eat some more
*maybe even swim some more

Whee~

Also, I'm going to a wedding two weeks from now. Loads of good food. <3
(you see a pattern here?)

Aand finally the last weekend of the month is a trip to a forum meeting.

The only thing I'm really really worried about anymore are the results of the entrance exams. What if I don't make it T_T

Oh, and I did something good for a change today! I donated blood. Twas fun. Tho..as expected, it got me feeling slightly dizzy.

Enjoy the summer!

-Mint

[EDIT]
BTW! I need to decide what to do with my hair by saturday 14th (the wedding). I was thinking of curls and messy braids (see pictures below), but I'm still not sure.

Any suggestions?
Ugh, I'm writing again after way too long. x.x

So..the school ended, and I graduated (a year later than supposed to, but shush!). I actually got an invitation to the entrance exams of one of the unis/colleges I applied to!
And so I was off to the entrance exams, earlier this month.
I THINK I did OK.
Well, nothing seemed horribly beyond my understanding and I filled all the blanks in the exam sheet. I also tried my best to give them a good impression of me myself in the interview.
However..why is it, that now that I feel like I did well that day, I get this creepy unpleasant feeling that BECAUSE I think I did good, everything just MUST'VE been as wrong as possible?
Am I making any sense here?
No amazement if I'm not. ^^;

I also tried a summer job during this month.
For 3 days. -cough-
>.>
That was fun.
NOT!

I was working at a horse stable near our summer cottage and actually enjoyed working with the horses. Yeah, that was until I met the high priestess of Hell.
Words fail me.
She was the daughter of the owner and naturally had her own horse there, and naturally spent her days there as well. With me.
That little princess.
Oh my, is that me trying to commit a murder with a water bucket?
Well, luckily enough, all the dust from the stable was near triggering an asthma for me, so I had to quit anyway.
Boohoo.

It's late and I should be getting sleep so I can sleep in tomorrow and do nothing all day.
That just sounds so wrong. T.T

Be good now. ♥

もう朝だよ・・・お早う枕さん！
ははは～
私最悪だ。＞３＜

-Mint

Woohoo!

I have finally finished my last day at work for now.
And boy, what a day it was. (>w<)

- We all had to come an hour earlier than what was said the day before
(we were all noted no earlier than this morning)
- We called the cops once
- I dropped a whole tray full of plates and all
- I slipped on the kitchen floor and hit my head on a counter
- We had to work overtime to get everything done. Again.

I'm kinda relieved now that it's over. I can sleep in on saturdays and spend my weekends doing school (+fansubbing stuff) without being dead tired after work.

That's it for now, I try to be as boring as possible! <3

-Mint

Hungreeh. >.<

I'm so excited about thursday. There's no way in hell I'll be able to get any sleep before the buss leaves..even if I wanted to.

Things are slowly falling into place with school too, I've made peace with the teacher I always thought was too tough.

But why are bosses always so scary?
Or is it just me?
I need to call her to ask if she'd still offer me the summer job position even if I asked to get all of May free.
She should understand right?
I mean..it's for school, she'll understand my thinking of priority? Specially now that it's nearly graduation time.
But still I'm nervous about calling her. Gahh. (-.-)

Naww, I'll worry about it when I get back. While in Scotland, I'm gonna try to relax and think about everything else BUT school/work (though I need to take a few school works with me to finish them in time).

Teehee.
Happy spring!
